Population change for Trafford wards

The ONS published mid year population estimates for wards for 2021 and 2022, these are the first population estimates for Trafford’s 2023 wards. The ward population estimates were published as official statistics in development.

From the 21 wards, 11 had a population increase while the remaining 10 had a population decrease.

The ward of Gorse Hill & Cornbrook has experienced the highest increase in population with 6.1% change from 2021 to 2022, corresponding to an approximate increase of 693 more people in one year.

The other wards had experienced changes ranging from 1.4% rise in population in Timperley Central, to a 1.1% decline in population in Timperley North.

For 13 out of 21 wards, the highest percentage increase in population was in the age band 75 and above from 2021 to 2022. Meanwhile, one-third of the wards experienced the biggest percentage decrease in population in the age band 25 to 34.

In Gorse Hill & Cornbrook, the ward with the largest increase in population, the five-year age group with the largest rise in population between 2021 and 2022 was age group 20 to 24 with a 19% increase. Gorse Hill & Cornbrook experienced a 5% decrease on population on the age band 70 to 74, the largest decrease among five-years age groups for the ward.

Although Timperley North was the area with the largest decrease in population, Old Trafford was the area with the largest decrease by age group with 15.9% in the 90 and over age band.

Considering the change of number of residents by age band from 2021 to 2022, the ward with the largest increase was Gorse Hill & Cornbrook with 199 more residents aged 20 to 24 years. The ward with the largest decrease was Hale with 81 less residents aged 45 to 49.
